About 97% of carpets today are made of synthetic materials that are easy to maintain and can be adapted to a wide variety of styles and uses.  The most common materials used are:

NYLON: which is an excellent choice for most traffic areas because it is durable, static-free, stain-resistant and repels mildew well.  Nylon also keeps its fiber height so it can withstand the weight of people and furniture. Colors do not run, since dye is added right into fiber production.  About 90% of all homes have nylon carpet.  

OLEFIN:  is the next most popular material also known as polypropylene (Berber).  It is the least expensive fiber and therefore is used in about 80% of commercial carpets including artificial turf.  It is strong and resist mildew and moisture and easy to clean.

POLYESTER:  a great looking carpet option, and less expensive than wool or nylon.  Polyester is commonly used in soft loop piles or Berber loops, making carpets that are luxurious and crush resistant.  It is also known for its vibrant colors and is naturally resistant to fading.  It is cleaned safely with water base chemicals.

ACRYLICS:  is a wool-like material that is often use in velvet and level-loop carpets.  It offers the look of wool at much less the cost.  It is strong and resists stains and sun fading.  Its one weak point is that it does not stand up to heavy taffic well and crushes easily.

WOOL:  the royal family of carpets; wool offers superior performance in appearance. Commonly can be area rugs. Soft fibers with rich, luxuious feel that maintains height fairly well.  Wool repels water and can be dyed.  It cleans easily and lasts a long time, though the ends tend to fray and can be expensive to purchase initially.

A clean carpet wears better and lasts longer.  Most carpet manufacturers suggest to have the carpet cleaned at least every 6 months to maintain the fabric height and wear patterns.
